In the Novel, "Ten Letters", by Eli Saslow takes place in South Philadelphia during President Barack Obama's presidency. It tells the story of Stefan Johnson, a High Schooler, who is constantly being made fun of. He must fight against racism and being the only black person who is running for Student Body President. First, in the beginning of the story, it talks about how people keep calling him "Obama" because he looked like him and acted the same way as him. It also talks about how he earned a reputation at Roman Catholic High School, for being "standoffish and quiet" and it talks about the similarites between Obama and Stefan. Some of the similarites that both Obama and Stefan share are that they're black, abandoned by their father, raised by their mother, and constantly made fun of. After that, Stefan decided he wanted to make a change to Roman Catholic High School by running for Student Body President. He was very sure that he wouldn't be elected president because there has never been a black Student Body President at Roman Catholic High School and he never told his mom about being President.
After he finished his speech about being Student Body President, there was nobody more surprised than Stefan Johnson about being elected President. After he was elected President, many people started to like him, became more popular, and the people said "You're better than Obama" and "My favorite Prez." Next, at the end of the year, he finished graduating and he was now in College. The colleges that Stefan Johnson wanted to go to were Hostra, La Salle, or Pittsburgh. Monica Johnson (Stefan's mom) didn't like Pittsburgh or Hostra because they were far and costed a lot of money, so that left only La Salle. Finally, at the end of the story, they visited La Salle and both of them loved it, even with their flaws.
