The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse Analysis
The short story “The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse”, by William Saroyan takes place in the San Joaquin Valley during the early morning. It tells the story of Mourad, the antagonist, who steals a white horse and wants his cousin to ride it. The four components that are used in the story are dialogue, setting/mood, vocabulary, and characters. For example, on page 1 in The Summer of the Beautiful White Horse, it says “Aram, he said”, but there weren’t any quotation marks in this book. In Addition, for the setting and mood, the book said that it took place at 4 am during summer day break. In the book, it didn’t tell us if they lived in Armenia to the San Joaquin Valley or from the San Joaquin Valley to Armenia. Also, in the book, there wasn’t that many characters that William Saroyan talked about. Some of the characters that I can remember are Mourad, uncle Khosrove, Arak, Zorab, and the farmer. Finally, there were a lot of vocabulary words. For example, the word Capricious (on page 4) means a given unaccountable change in mood or behavior. Another word was Pious (on page 3), which means to be religious.
